PCB manufacturing is a complex process involving multiple steps, each critical to producing high-quality boards.
Step 1: Design File Preparation
The process begins with Gerber files and drill data from your PCB design software. Manufacturers review these files for manufacturability.
Step 2: Inner Layer Processing
For multilayer boards, inner layers are printed, developed, and etched first. Each layer undergoes careful inspection before proceeding.
Step 3: Layer Lamination
Multiple layers are aligned and bonded together under heat and pressure to create the complete board stack-up.
Step 4: Drilling
Precision CNC drilling creates holes for through-hole components and vias. Modern machines can drill thousands of holes with extreme accuracy.
Step 5: Plating and Imaging
Copper is deposited in drilled holes and on outer layers. Photoresist is applied and exposed to create the circuit pattern.
Step 6: Etching
Unwanted copper is chemically removed, leaving only the desired circuit traces and pads.
Step 7: Solder Mask and Silkscreen
Solder mask protects the copper and prevents solder bridges. Silkscreen adds component references and other markings.
Step 8: Surface Finish
A protective finish (HASL, ENIG, OSP, etc.) is applied to exposed copper pads for solderability and corrosion protection.
Step 9: Testing and Inspection
Electrical testing, visual inspection, and dimensional checks ensure boards meet specifications.
Step 10: Routing and Packaging
Individual boards are separated from panels and packaged for shipment.
